Working as a freelance writer can be liberating. You choose your clients, create your own schedule and set your deadlines. Many writers opt for the freelance route to circumvent the frustrations of dull meetings, annoying co-workers and unfulfilling assignments.

But one professional obligation freelancers aren’t exempt from is networking. The word alone prompts eye rolling, maybe because we’ve all been to a networking event and left drained, with only crumpled business cards to show for our efforts. But networking is an essential tool in the freelance writer’s arsenal because it enables connection with potential clients and like-minded professionals. Below I’ve outlined a few general tips for you to get out there and network like your livelihood depends on it — and it just might!

  1. Maintain an online presence

Yes, I know you’ve heard this before, but it bears repeating: maintaining an online presence is important when you work for yourself, and it goes beyond making a Twitter account. What you post reflects on you, so make sure the content is appropriate and congruent with your brand. If your speciality is real estate, for example, live tweeting sports 24/7 will confuse people. Follow editors and publications you’d like to pitch and fellow writers you admire. It’s become increasingly common for editors to post calls for pitches via tweet and field pitches via DM; staying on top of social media is important to get a bigger picture of the media landscape and ensure you remain aware of potential opportunities.

2. Work your existing network

Sometimes the concept of networking overwhelms people because they immediately picture trying to forge brand new connections in a hyper-competitive space. But networking is also about deep-diving into your existing network and figuring out what might be there. Consider your professional history in its totality and take stock of former colleagues, instructors, and mutual friends that could assist in reaching your objectives. Remain active in alumni groups on and offline if that’s relevant to you, or consider the hobbies you’ve taken up and who you’ve met through them. Check your assumptions at the door and be open to conversations with unlikely sources. You don’t know how fruitful they could be, or where they might lead.

3. Keep your portfolio updated

This one might sound like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how often people ask to discuss their work with me and then…have nothing to show me. Make sure your portfolio is up to date, accurate, and representative of your abilities — both in areas of expertise and style. If you’re a journalist but all your clips are personal essays, it sends a confusing message to prospective clients and editors. If you cover lifestyle and entertainment but your bylines are about medical technology, people won’t know how to categorize you. Your portfolio is an important part of your brand as a freelancer — yes, you should be branding yourself! — and something you want to be proud to show off.
